Around 26 million passengers took off and landed here in 2019: KKIA in Riyadh is the second largest airport in Saudi Arabia by passenger numbers. The airport was completed in 1983. Unusual are its 375 square kilometer area, of which currently only about a quarter is used, as well as the control tower, which at 81 meters is one of the tallest in the world. The current renovation work can be carried out in various phases during ongoing operations. The goal of the project is to expand KKIA’s passenger capacities, among other things through a new 5th terminal, and to improve the services.

Safety when it matters most

Product solutions from the fastening specialist fischer are being used in the renovation of Terminals 3 and 4, each seven stories high. "We are pleased that our fischer FireStop solutions are being installed as an important safety measure at KKIA," says Constantin Wiegert, Head of Facade and Fire Protection Systems at fischer. "After the construction of Istanbul Airport, the renovation and expansion of KKIA is the next major airport project within a short time frame for which we are implementing passive fire protection.  All installation openings for MEP applications (mechanical, electrical, and sanitary work) and construction joints at KKIA are securely sealed with fischer FireStop solutions. The installed products include the fischer firestop FiAM. When this one-component, water-based acrylic emulsion is exposed to fire, it forms a highly insulating barrier. This ensures up to five hours of compartmentation. Also installed was the universally applicable fischer fire protection sealant UFS 310. In the event of fire, it expands to many times its volume. Subsequently, the UFS 310 cures into an elastic, flexible fire seal. It achieves up to four hours of fire resistance. For numerous fastening tasks in concrete, the fischer steel anchors FAZ II, EA II, and FZEA II are also used.

The heavy pipe installations are supported by the fischer heavy-duty system FMS. Compared to a conventional steel construction, the FMS system offers decisive advantages in terms of assembly. The hot-dip galvanized profiles are cut to size on site and permanently and securely screwed together with brackets. This eliminates the complex welding of steel constructions and the application of corrosion protection on site, significantly reducing assembly time – which leads to lower costs.
